Students discussed which of the texts on yesterday's chart was the most persuasive and which was the most biased. We then began our "Poetry Autopsy" exercise by reviewing Stage 2 terms from the handout and then breaking into groups and choosing a section from Stage 2 to examine and post on the board using the poem "Chemistry". Our next step was to keep in our groups and begin dissecting a poem from the choices on the front table. Students will be doing stages 1 - 3 as a group. We will look at the rubric tomorrow and finish off this work.
NOTE: If you have a poem you are going to be using for the last part of "Poetry Autopsy" bring it in tomorrow. We might get that far.
Reminder: Terms quiz tomorrow.

Poetry terms quiz on Friday Sept. 16th
I was in a meeting but students did the following work:
1. They read "Circus Animals" and looked for at least 15 examples of devices from their devices for poetry. There are actually over 30. If you were missing, print the poem and hi light and label at least 15 examples . You will need this tomorrow.
2. They also read "The Interlopers" which can be found at http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/Inte.shtml and began to work on the Short Fiction Terms Overview which can be found at the Handouts tab. If you were missing, you are expected to have read the story and be at least to question 5 for tomorrow's class.
NOTE: if you took a paper copy of the story, I goofed and the final page is missing (talk about anti-climactical). You can read the end at the link listed above.

Sorry for the missing post yesterday. As all of you are aware we worked on our outline for the question "Who or what is the real antagonist in 'The Chalk Outline'?" All students were to have written a rough draft for today. Today we peer/self reviewed our paragraphs using the following symbols/indicators:
If you have a hook, place a check mark next to it.
Check mark for author, title
Underline your thesis
Number your points #1, 2 and 3
Letter your 3 quotes as A, B and C
Underline your conclusion.
For Tuesday Sept. 13th, HAND IN outline, rough draft with review, and final draft
We also worked on Terms for Unit One by looking over the poetry terms and indicating which ones we knew. We then did a practice quiz for these.

Wednesday Sept. 7th
Students spent 15 minutes getting ready for their presentations then we presented and the class did assessment (both presentations, self and group members). There is one last group who arrived this week and they will present by next Monday at the very latest.
Something to Think About: Considering the presentations and the story, answer this question: Who is the actual antagonist in the story? Tomorrow we will be writing a rough draft of a personal response around this question.
MORE FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Is there such a thing as human nature?

Thursday Sept. 1st
Students were reminded to hand in their letters of Introduction and send me a message from the Help tab of the Teacher/homework page. We then went back to the "Inferencing: an Educated Guess" from yesterday and filled in 6 examples of inferencing from yesterday's murder mystery. I handed out "The Chalk Outline" and "The Chalk Outline: Who Dun it?" (see handouts tab). I have divided the class into 3 groups for this task. If you were missing this week, you are to read the story and come up with your own theory of who is responsible for the events listed on the Who Dun it assignment. When you return, we will discuss what format you will use to show your theory and supporting text. Students were to read the story and hi light the text which they feel will support their theory. We will have a few minutes tomorrow to finish reading and hi lighting then break into groups to begin planning.

Wednesday August 31st
We began with the students writing Letters of Introduction to me following the handout on the Handouts page. If you were missing, please write me a letter at least 3/4 of a page addressing the topics on the handout and any other areas you think I need to know. The class then revisited the bank robbery mystery and we discussed what makes an effective group. We used the 3 areas brainstormed by period 1 class and and broke up into groups to identify what each criteria looks and sounds like. I will be creating a formal rubric with these descriptors and posting it tomorrow. If you are missing today, look for my post and ask questions if you are not clear what the descriptors mean. Students got a handout about "Inferencing: Making an Educated Guess" and we discussed the first page. We then did another group activity , this time a murder mystery. We will be using the clues from the mystery to complete the handout on making an educated guess. If you were missing, you will get the clues when you get back (They're laminated cards so I can't post them) and you can work through the inferences on the handout.

Tuesday August 30th
We began by discussing the general rules and expectations with a focus on being responsible. We then looked at the course outline (see Handouts tab) and I answered any questions students had. We visited the Help and Handouts section of this Homework site . STUDENTS ARE TO VISIT THE HELP TAB AND SEND ME A MESSAGE LIKE "I WAS HERE" to show they know how to navigate the site. Finally, we played a game about inferences. Students went into groups and tried to solve a bank robbery mystery. We discussed our choices for the perpetrator including our biases and previous knowledge and author's clues. If you missed today, please watch the video below to become familiar with inferences and navigate to the Help tab and send me a message.
WILL K: Please look at the course outline and if you have any questions or concerns, please ask when you get back. Also, watch the video below. We will be doing more work on inferences, so you don't need to worry about the robbery mystery we did today. Our focus was on looking for inferences and the fact that we all make assumptions based on both our experiences and an author's clues.
