We started with the Gallery Walks. Thanks to those who presented and those great audience members.
We ended the class by working on the comparison and contrast rough drafts which got left behind in the excitement of the Gallery Walk. These MUST be finished by Friday. Also, students who have not completed their two paragraphs of personal response need to have them ready for Thursday when we will be choosing the best one and writing it up into 'final copy' form for evaluation.

TUESDAY SEPT. 16TH
Students transferred their information from one of their charts of comparison/contrast onto the Comparison/contrast Outline for a 5 paragraph essay Some students were away for the Envirothon. For the last 30 minutes some of the class we went down to the library to begin looking for short stories to use with our Gallery Walk exercise (See Handout). Since so many were away today, you will have a chance to choose story tomorrow.

MONDAY SEPT. 15TH
Students first organized their portfolio folder with 3 sections - A , B, and C. Each divider has a list of what should be completed so far. Many students realized that they are missing some information. Students then built a comparison/contrast chart for "The Pin" comparing and/or contrasting Johnnie and Cecil B. in at least 4 ways with 2 quotes of support for each point ( If you said Johnny appreciated humour but his father did not, you would need a quote to prove he liked humour and one to prove his father did not). The class finished off this chart as well as the one from "Butcher Bird" and when finished used the time to catch up on missing/unfinished work from last week.
FRIDAY SEPT. 12TH
Students first watched the power point below on allusion. They used the handout Allusions in the Pin available in the Handouts tab and filled in the meaning of each allusion from the Power Point presentation. We then read the story "The Pin" and students were to fill in what they felt the purpose/use of each allusion on the Allusions in the Pin . THis will be due on Monday. Students were reminded to be sure to have all of the following finished and ready ASAP:
a. Nature and Media questions - "Bear On Delhi Road", dancing bears video, "Vultures" by John Meyer and "Vultures" by Achebe
b. "The Code" outline, rough draft and final draft
c. Human Nature paragraph rough draft
d. Slam poetry response to video rough draft
e. Comparison/contrast

THURSDAY SEPT. 11TH
We went through any concerns from yesterday and I asked them to be sure they handed in their work from Nature and Media. We then read "Butcher Bird" and made a chart to show at least 4 similarities and/or differences between Mr. Garfield and Harry the father in the story.

Tuesday Sept. 9th
Students first reviewed their personal responses and looked that they had included references to the video they were referring to as well as specific examples. They are to remember these points when they write their personal response to last week's slam videos. They need to choose one and write a response which could include what they liked, what they are reminded of, what they agree or disagree with, the most powerful images, etc. A guideline is to use 3 points in your paragraph. The rough draft is due on Friday.
We did not finish the activity on "For the Death 100 Whales" as many have not finished this to post and use. GET IT DONE!
We started our Nature and Media Handout by reading "Bear on the Delhi Road", doing the first 4 questions on the handout, then watching the video on the rescue of the dancing bears Ted Talks. This video is available at the English 11 - 1 tab. We then did the questions on this video. Both sets of questions are to be handed in.

Some of the personal responses to the human nature videos were returned. I still have 5 left but you will have them tomorrow. We will then write our personal response to one of the videos from Friday. We then did a peer review of our "The Code" paragraphs. Reviewers were to indicate :
Hook - check mark next to it. Missing? Add "Hook needed" in margin.
Author, title, and key word irony - check mark beside each.
Three points - number 1, 2 and 3
Quotes - put a, b, and c next to each.
Explanation of the USE of each - underline
Conclusion - put in brackets
The final draft of this paragraph as well as your outline and your rough draft with review is due on Thursday Sept. 12th.
We also looked at the Beat Poets today as a form of slam poetry. Students read the article from Time magazine on the death of 100 whales in
1954 then read the poem "For the Death of 100 Whales" by Michael McClure. We reviewed the handout Analyzing Poetry then we broke into groups using the Individual section of "Group poster on 'For the Death of 100 Whales'". Students were to put their answer on a piece of postable paper at the back of the class. This is to be ready for the BEGINNING of tomorrow's class.

THURSDAY SEPT. 4TH
SORRY ABOUT YESTERDAY'S MISSING POST. We finished working on some brush up on assonance and consonance as well as collated all of our ironies so that we could use them in a paragraph. We got the handout "Writing a Paragraph of Literary Response" and reviewed the rules.
Today we used that same handout to do an outline and add our quotes then began working on a rough draft. The rough draft is due on Monday.
STILL MISSING some paragraphs on Human Nature from last week. Please get them in.

TUESDAY SEPT 2nd
We reviewed the Consonance/Assonance handout from last week. Most people are still trying to wrap their heads around this concept so we did the first page of a new handout on assonance. We took the bolded term and circled the word without rhyme which still had assonance with the bolded word.
Next we watched the video below which showed irony. We made a t- chart which used What was Expected on the left and What Really Happened on the Left. We added 3 examples to this chart from the video below. For example: We expect an execution chamber to be dangerous BUT the chamber was closed because it was unsafe.

FRIDAY AUGUST 29th
Today we discussed the concept of Irony. We brainstormed 3 types of irony and examples of each. Students then read the story "The Interlopers" (available at the Handouts tab) and looked for at least 3 ironies. To finish off the day, students were given time to work on their rough draft of a paragraph of response to what they consider human nature to be about. In the paragraph remember to respond to ideas from at least one of the videos.
Students also used the green handout to add examples of the Short Fiction terms from "The Interlopers". Both this sheet and the rough draft of the paragraph are due on Tuesday.
BONUS: What type of irony is here? Explain your thinking in choosing this type?

We then watched the power point presentation on Irony types and discussed what type each was. Unfortunately this Power Point will not load. Please ask to see it when you get back. We then read through Alannis Morrisette's lyrics for "Ironic"( http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/alanismorissette/ironic.html) and discussed which situations were actually ironic. These we added to our irony chart. We also discussed how we could take the situations and make them more ironic than they were. For example, rain on your wedding day might be ironic if you chose to be married in Mauii for the sun.
We read part of the short story "The Code" and wrote down the ironies on our chart. Students are to finish the story tonight and finish off the ironies on the chart.
SORRY but I don't have electronic copies of this story. If you are missing, you will need to get a paper copy from me when you get back.

Students started with a review of lit. terms from yesterday by doing a worksheet titled "English Eleven Unit One Terms Quiz" which can be found on the Handouts tab. We then corrected this sheet.
We then watched the video below on Human Nature Psychology 210 and students looked for the 3 beliefs about human nature. We discussed each idea and students wrote on their individual whiteboards which belief(s) they most agreed with. The dominant idea was that we are blank slates. We held a spirited discussion about this idea and brainstormed examples to support our theories.
