We had a discussion about the variety of writing craft books in the classroom and specifically those which had helpful information on publishing and submitting for publication. We then checked in with each student on where they were with their pet projects. From there students worked on their projects.

We had guest speaker Emil Shier as our guest speaker . His subject was the writing process for his novel which includes photos. Students were reminded of subtext and the importance of Show Not Tell.

Students looked at a sample of Wordpress and were to register today on the Wordpress site to begin their travel blogs. We also looked at the Geotraveler's Niche site and noted that blogs use: personal accounts, narratives, imagery, bright and interesting photos, catchy titles, and brief paragraphs and points.
Finally, students had time to work on their pet projects or to begin playing around with their travel blog.

Students wrote a journal BUT IT HAD TO BE BASED ON AN IMAGE FOUND IN A MAGAZINE OR ONLINE. Please include the image with your journal or provide the link to any online image.

Students wrote in their journals for 15 minutes then we went back to creating found poetry. For Found poem #2 students could do one of the following:
A. Using text from any source ( old novel, etc - We tore pages from old romance novels) students are to hi light interesting words and phrases and create a poem using these words.
B. Black out type poem - using text from any source, black out all words except words and phrases you consider important or powerful . NOTE; You cannot use more than 2 words in a row.
Tomorrow we will move to making Found Poem #3 by cutting out words and phrases from magazines and using them to create a poem.

Some students went to a presentation on inappropriate images on your phone while others worked on their scripts which need to be ready for tomorrow. You MUST be present to workshop your 2 pieces. They need to be in proper script form and ready to be copied to share.

Students went over the final assignment from this section - changing a text/prose into a stage scene. They were reminded that it's a requirement to have all 7 finished in rough draft form for Friday and have 2 in a format which we can workshop too. This is for a mark so get those in.

Journals first then we watched this video on The Fourth Wall and discussed the important aspects of writing about the Fourth Wall: timing/placement, purpose, clear stage direction. Students did not have their monologues ready - AHEM< AHEM... I am keeping track so have them ready for tomorrow. Also, your Breaking the Fourth Wall should be ready.

10. Narrow Escape - Where does your character go to be safe? Where might he/she escape to either literally or mentally? Write a scene using the 5 senses and including this safe place for your character. 1/2 pg min.
All of these activities are for a completion mark at this point. At the end of the term we will give them a quality control mark. I will however provide feedback for all of them when you submit on Friday.

Description exercise: Students were to find or draw a landscape (can have people in it). Find a focal point and first describe the scene from the outside in towards the focal point in paragraph form. Then write from the focal point to the outside.

I made copies of everyone's short stories and we did a workshop, critiquing them and sharing our critiques. If you were away, you are expected to have your short story first pages ready for critique (Kara , we critiqued yours since you left it with me. I will give you the feedback on Monday).

Students did their usual 15 minutes of journal writing then we did the exercise Sight for the Blind. See Handouts tab. For tomorrow students are to have finished the exercise including describing a food. We will be sharing these descriptions and trying to guess what each person was describing. We will also be sharing one piece of writing with a partner who will critique it.

Students began with 15 minutes to write in their journals. We then read a short article on critiquing (Tips for Critiquing can be found on the Handouts tab) and discussed The Red Wheelbarrow. We then read an article on Writing about Smell (Handouts tab) and did the exercise attached.

Tuesday Jan. 24th
Students looked at the course outline and we had a discussion about what they were hoping to write and why each was taking the course.
We then read through handout Journals and Journaling and talked about what journals were for. You will need some form of journal for tomorrow's class. Finally, we did two writing exercises:
1. add a word - They started writing anything they wished after I put the word "Wombat" on the board. As they wrote, I added different words which they had to include as they wrote.
2. Far, far away - they were to think about someone who annoys or bugs them. Then they thought about if they could send him/her anywhere in world, where would it be. From there they imagined their nemesis off in that place and began writing a piece which began "One day the postcard arrived..."
