Students are reminded that this Friday any NHIs become zeroes for the purpose of reporting for Term One.  This does not mean that they cannot hand in this work later, but as of Friday the report card will reflect the work finished and the skills they have shown.  Students then went over the Sticky Note Symbolism exercise from Friday and discussed the meaning of symbolism.  Key Idea:  A symbol represents an idea.  For example, the toilet in The Help represents the white's lack of knowledge and their racism.
Students then read in their novels and working on the tasks.

Picture
TUESDAY OCT. 14th
Students were reminded that many still have missing assignments from the first unit.  We continued our novel unit by reading "Swamp Monsters Make Good Housewives" and having a practice lit. circle.  Students looked over the handout on Lit. Circle Logs and chose a role in relation to the story. Each then wrote their role and their comments on a piece of paper.  If you were missing, download the Lit. Circle logs handouts from the Handouts tab.  You will need these to participate in the next lit. circle.
The students were called out for photographs during this class, so those who remained continued to read their novels.

Picture
WEDNESDAY SEPT. 24TH
Due to Challenge Day and some students ditching us,  we were only able to watch 2 Gallery Walk presentations.  For the remaining time, we discussed what makes a good excuse and how this is related to story telling.  Students were to think of a time when they could use a good excuse and turn it into a story with interesting detail, etc.
Students who were away will be expected to present tomorrow and will be updated on the upcoming 'a good excuse' assignment.

PictureThis is Gabby - brave and strong to do her presentation even though she was worried she couldn't. Bravo!
TUESDAY SEPT. 23
Students had 10 minutes to prepare for the Gallery Walks.  There were MANY students who were not prepared to present. Those who did present did well.  YOU ARE BRAVE!  These must be presented TOMORROW at the latest.  In the last 15 minutes we discussed what makes a good storyteller and began the Under the Microscope exercise.

Picture
MONDAY SEPT. 22
Students viewed a couple of gallery walk mock presentations, discussed positive presentation skills and made rubrics which show the criteria for presentation/delivery, knowledge and visual for presentation.  These ideas will be incorporated into the rubric to be used in tomorrow's Gallery Walks.  The rest of the class students finished off and rehearsed their presentations.
Picture
FRIDAY SEPT. 19th

WEDNESDAY SEPT. 17TH
Some were away with Social Justice .  Those who were here worked on their Gallery Walk projects.  Students who were here should have chosen a story as well as made some notes on the areas listed on Unit One Fiction Terms.

Picture
TUESDAY SEPT. 16TH
Students transferred their information from one of their charts of comparison/contrast onto the Comparison/contrast Outline for a 5 paragraph essay (Brandon - students are choosing to use ONE of the charts from either "The Pin" or "Butcher Bird"  You may want to just use "Butcher Bird" since you have access to it.)  Some students were away for the Envirothon.  For the last 30 minutes of class we went down to the library to begin looking for short stories to use with our Gallery Walk exercise (See Handout).

MONDAY SEPT. 15TH
Students first organized their portfolio folder with 3 sections - A , B, and C.  Each divider has a list of what should be completed so far.  Many students realized that they are missing some information.  Students then built a comparison/contrast chart for "The Pin" comparing and/or contrasting Johnnie and Cecil B. in at least 4 ways with 2 quotes of support for each point ( If you said Johnny appreciated humour but his father did not, you would need a quote to prove he liked humour and one to prove his father did not).  The class finished off this chart as well as the one from "Butcher Bird" and when finished used the time to catch up on missing/unfinished work from last week.

Picture
FRIDAY SEPT. 12TH
Students first watched the power point below on allusion.  They used the handout Allusions in the Pin available in the Handouts tab and filled in the meaning of each allusion from the Power Point presentation.  We then read the story "The Pin" and students were to fill in what they felt the purpose/use of each allusion on the Allusions in the Pin .  THis will be due on Monday.  Students were reminded to be sure to have all of the following finished and ready ASAP:

BONUS: WHAT FAMOUS ARTIST AND FAMOUS SUBJECT ARE BEING ALLUDED TO?
Thursday Sept. 11th
Yesterday I was away sick so no homework page entry was made.  Students were to finish the Nature and Media handouts by working on "Vultures" as well as John Mayer's lyrics for "Vultures".  These were to be handed in.  They could also work on their slam poetry response paragraph.
Today I reminded the students of the due dates both past and present.  Students were to hand in their "The Code" paragraphs with the outline and rough draft.  Their response to one of the slam poetry pieces was also due.  Many were not ready.  We will be keeping a due date calendar on the whiteboard to assist them in keeping up to date.
Students then read "Butcher Bird" and were to create a chart of comparison and contrast between Mr. Garfield and the father in the story.  This is due tomorrow.

Tuesday Sept. 9th
First we reviewed our personal responses to What is Human Nature.  Students were reminded to include specific examples both from the video and from their experiences.  The second paragraph of personal response based on one of the slam poems from last week is due this Thursday.
We started to look more at man's relationship to humans by reading "Bear on Dehli Road" and using the handout "Nature and Media".  We then did the first 4 questions on this poem .  Next we watched the video below on the dancing bears and did the next set of questions.  These questions are to be handed in.
See Handouts tab for these handouts.
PictureBeatnik hipsters
MONDAY SEPT. 8TH
Some of the personal responses to the human nature videos were returned.  I still have 5 left but you will have them tomorrow.  We will then write our personal response to one of the videos from Friday.  We then did a peer review of our "The Code" paragraphs.  Reviewers were to indicate :
Hook - check mark next to it.  Missing?  Add "Hook needed" in margin.
Author, title, and key word irony - check mark beside each.
Three points - number 1, 2 and 3
Quotes - put a, b, and c next to each.
Explanation of the USE of each - underline
Conclusion - put in brackets
The final draft of this paragraph as well as your outline and your rough draft with review is due on Thursday Sept. 12th.
We also looked at the Beat Poets today as a form of slam poetry.  Students read the article from Time magazine (<http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,857557,00.html.)  on the death of 100 whales in
1954 then read the poem "For the Death of 100 Whales" by Michael McClure (Handout tab).  We reviewed the handout Analyzing Poetry (Handout tab) then we broke into groups using the Individual section of "Group poster on 'For the Death of 100 Whales'"(Handout tab). Students were to put their answer on a piece of postable paper at the back of the class.  This is to be ready for the BEGINNING of tomorrow's class.
Brandon:  Read the poem and look at the Individual section of "Group Poster...". Choose 2 sections to write some notes on.  You can use the Analyzing Poetry handout as a guideline.

Picture
Friday Sept. 5th
Slam Poetry - We discussed what people thought slam poetry is then watched the 4 videos from English 11 - 2 tab - "To this Day", "Invictus""What Teachers Make" and "Pleae Don't Take My Air Jordans".  Students used the graphic organizer from Slam Poetry to jot down ideas and impressions, facts, quotes, etc. for each video.  If you missed, you do not have to use the organizer, but you do need notes for the video you will be writing a personal respone to one Monday.
REMINDER: Rough drafts for "The Code" due on Monday.

Picture
Thursday Sept. 4th
We spent the entire period building our rough drafts from yesterday's information.  Students were shown how to imbed quotations.  The rough drafts should be ready for Monday's class.  NOTE to PARENTS:  Many students did not finish this task and did not have their outlines prepared.  I am concerned.
Brandon:  If you are writing your rough draft.  Remember to integrate your quotations/textual evidence smoothly in your draft.  If you need help with this see me when you get back or send me a draft so I can make some suggestions.

Wednesday Sept. 3rd
Today we finished off the story and brainstormed a list of ironies from the story by breaking into groups and exchanging ideas.  We then used the handout "Writing a Paragraph of Literary Response" and filled in the planner on the third page.  The topic is "Discuss the uses of irony in 'The Code'.  "  We brainstormed the various uses of irony - entertainment, character development, create conflict, humour.  On the planner  your point will be the irony you found, the supporting text is a quote from the story, and the explanation will be which of the uses of irony each point uses.

TUES. SEPT.2nd
We reviewed the Consonance/Assonance handout from last week.  Most people are still trying to wrap their heads around this concept so we did the first page of a new handout on assonance (see Handout tab).  We took the bolded term and circled the word without rhyme which still had assonance with the bolded word.
Next we watched the video below which showed irony.  We made a t- chart which used What was Expected on the left and What Really Happened on the Left.  We added 3 examples to this chart from the video below.  For example:  We expect an execution chamber to be dangerous BUT the chamber was closed because it was unsafe.

We then watched the power point presentation on Irony types and discussed what type each was.  Unfortunately this Power Point will not  load.  Please ask to see it when you get back.  We then read through Alannis Morrisette's lyrics for "Ironic"( http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/alanismorissette/ironic.html)  and discussed which situations were actually ironic.  These we added to our irony chart. We also discussed how we could take the situations and make them more ironic than they were.  For example, rain on your wedding day might be ironic if you chose to be married in Mauii for the sun.
We read part of the short story "The Code" and wrote down the ironies on our chart.  We will finish the story tomorrow in class and discuss irony as well as add it to the chart.
SORRY but I don't have electronic copies of this story.  If you are missing, you will need to get a paper copy from me when you get back. Brandon you may choose an ironic  short story from the Internet and make a list of ironies from it.  You can use the Writing a Paragraph of Literary Response Handout from the Handouts tab to  plan your paragraph.
TUESDAY AUGUST 26TH
WELCOME BACK!  The first class was spent doing the following:
1.    Discussion of expectations for class and work ethic.
2.    Review of the course outline.
3.    Review of Terms for Unit One ( see Handouts tab).  Students reviewed the terms and placed a check mark next to those they were familiar with.
4.    We then watched the video below.  Our theme is Nature and Human Nature.  Students used their whiteboards to indicate whether they considered human nature to be positive, negative or a black slate.  We then discussed what examples they could create to support their theory.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27TH
We first did a practice exercise with devices and terms.  If you were missing,  go to the Handouts tab and do the handout "English Eleven Unit One Terms Quiz".  This is not an actual quiz, but a way for you to determine if you really know the terms which you said you did yesterday.
We then viewed the following videos on human nature.  Students were given the handout "Writing a Personal Response to Written Texts and Visual Material:.  We reviewed the handout then watched the videos.  Students were to choose a video to respond to and jot down notes on what they wished to comment on.  We didn't quite finish the last video.  We will finish it tomorrow and work on constructing our paragraphs.

THURSDAY AUGUST 28TH
Student first did a review of the concept of Assonance and Consonance.  Students as a group worked through the first side of the handout (See Handout tab) then broke into pairs to complete the second side.  NOTE:  Ignore the instructions on the second side and instead, circle the assonance and underline the consonance.
Then we reviewed the last video from yesterday and discussed the various ideas.  Students used the handout "Writing a Personal Response to Written Texts and Visual Material" to write a rough draft of personal response to the topic: What do you think human nature entails?  Use references to at least one of the videos in your paragraph.  These paragraphs are due tomorrow.  THIS IS A ROUGH DRAFT ONLY.
BONUS:  Below is Thomas Hobbes statement about man and war.  Is he correct?  Explain.

IT'S FRIDAY! AUGUST 29TH
Students were reminded to hand in their personal response paragraphs about their theory of human nature.  If you did not hand one in, you need to email it to me before Monday afternoon, so you will have it back on Tuesday.  We discussed the concept of irony and its three types.  We then read "The Interlopers" ( see Handouts tab)  and looked for 3 ironies.  Students are to use their green Terms for Unit One sheet and provide examples of the Fiction Terms from "The Interlopers".  This is to be handed in by Tuesday so we can review it.
BONUS:  What type of irony is here?  Why is this cartoon ironic?
