Students wrote their synthesis essays yesterday. Today we had a real mixed bag of events starting with a Fire Drill then back to class to look at the requirements for the Composition section of the BCP. You can see this info by going to <https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/exemplars/en_oc/en12-comp-sp.pdf> We then went over the synthesis questions and students who had not yet done so finished off the m/c for Tuesday's synthesis as well as the essay. Tomorrow we will be doing prep for Friday's mini-debates. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO GAIN MARKS IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE EDMODO OR DEMOS OR PRESENTATIONS.

BIG TEST TODAY! If you missed it, be prepared to write the day you're back.

Thursday Oct. 8th
We did the following:
1. Check in on where people are with their satires which are due on Tuesday.
2. Review for the unit exam tomorrow. REMEMBER TO READ "THE FLY" If you don't have it, lost it, etc., you can read it online or download a PDF by Googling the title.
3. Personal essays - I returned the personal essays along with a peer review checklist. Students used the checklist to look at their essays and then decided whether they were going to revise before I marked them, or put a MARK ME on the essay and submitted it for marking.
4. Passionate Shepherd/Reply/ and ballad final draft due next Tuesday
5. Novel choices: Students were asked to consider which novel they planned to read
a. Indian Horse - Richard Wigamese - a young Native boy goes to residential school and discovers he has a talent for hockey. Serious twist at the end of this one. Powerful but a shorter easily accessible text (Easy read)
b Three Day Road - Joe Boyden - 2 Oji-Cree boys go to WWI. My favorite read in 3 years.
c Life of Pi - Yann Martel - a boy is trapped on a boat with a bengal tiger for over 200 days.
d Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher -subject is Teen Suicide and although an easy read it requires some frank deep discussions.
e. I am the Messenger - A self proclaimed loser accidentally foils a bank robbery and begins to get mysterious playing cards in the mail. A must for hose of you who cheer for the underdog. Easy read but powerful message.
OTHER SUGGESTIONS
Lord of the Rings book 1
Catcher in the Rye

TODAY'S THE BIG DAY --- CUT OFF BY MIDNIGHT FOR ALL MIAS FROM LAST WEEK'S LIST. GET THEM IN.
Remember to be sure to get the story to be used on Friday's exam. I will be handing it out tomorrow. We will also be reviewing the BIG IDEAS from the unit. Be there to take notes and get in tune with what you will need to know on Friday's exam.
We read through 3 articles of satire: Tom King's Dead Dog Cafe "Aboriginal Decorating Tips", Drew Hayden Taylor's "Calls of the Weird" and "The Movie I'd Like to See" and discussed the tone and what was being satirized. Students were to think about what their own satire projects will be about as we are starting these tomorrow after review. Below is a sample of an A project.

Students began with the quick review of what's a sonnet and the differences between the two. We then reviewed the differences between parody and satire and read "The Nymph's Reply to the Passionate Shepherd" noting the bitterness of the tone and the complexity of the poem versus the original. Students then began writing their own "Passionate ___________" of at least 3 quatrains. Some who finished moved on to exchange poems and write a scathing reply to someone else's poem. You need to have your rough draft ready for Monday for those of you who have not begun the exchange process.

"If I could change one thing about the world..."
"My personal philosophy"

Students are reminded that there is no school tomorrow.
Students did the retest for Devices. Remember there is a fiction terms quiz on Wednesday. Those who were not re-writing finished reading "Death by Landscape" or working on missing work from the list on the board. It is expected that for Wednesday's class students will have finished reading the story and have identified the symbols. We finished the class by watching the video below on Cultural Appropriation. Students were to jot down some ideas of things they agreed or disagreed with. We will be using these Wednesday in an activity.

We then began reading "Death by Landscape" which we will finish off tomorrow or Monday depending on the assembly. We will be looking at the subject of Cultural Appropriation also in the next day or so, in connection with the short story from today.

Students are reminded that many still need to submit their paragraphs which were due yesterday. Also your flash cards are due Friday when you write your terms test. We finished by going into groups and deciphering Iron Maidens version of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" with students making point form notes of the plot of the poem. These were submitted for evaluation.

Tuesday Sept. 8th
Students peer reviewed their paragraphs which were to be ready for today. MANY were not ready (insert frown here). Student were to use a check mark next to each of the following criteria they found present: hook? author? title in ""? key word - allusion or Gothic fiction? Conclusion? Also they were to examine it for the PEE principle by numbering the key points #1, 2 and 3: the 6 quotes as a, b,c, d,e, f, and the 3 explanations as A B and C. They were also to check for smooth quote integration as well as underline 3 words which needed to be more formal. These drafts were then put in the hand in bin. The final draft is due next Wednesday Sept. 16th.
We also did a worksheet on metoymy and synecdoche (See Handouts tab) and worked on our flash cards which are due on Friday BEFORE THE TERMS QUIZ. Some found that the apps were more work than a good old fashioned flashcard.
