Students who wrote the LPI this morning were to bring any work they missed to today's class. Since many students did not attend this afternoon's class, they need to be aware that I did give an assignment due to the fact that no one brought work. Students are to prepare to write their own definition essay tomorrow by making a planner for a word/concept of their choosing. In this planner, they need to include:a. a dictionary definition, the origin of the word, examples and negation, comparison/contrast, categories and the criteria for the word. It is suggested that they do some research and be sure to keep their sources.

After comparing our reactions, each group crafted a definition of art.

4. Passionate Shepherd/Reply/ and ballad final draft due next Tuesday
5. Novel choices: Students were asked to consider which novel they planned to read
a. Indian Horse - Richard Wigamese - a young Native boy goes to residential school and discovers he has a talent for hockey. Serious twist at the end of this one. Powerful but a shorter easily accessible text (Easy read)
b Three Day Road - Joe Boyden - 2 Oji-Cree boys go to WWI. My favorite read in 3 years.
c Life of Pi - Yann Martel - a boy is trapped on a boat with a bengal tiger for over 200 days.
d Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher -subject is Teen Suicide and although an easy read it requires some frank deep discussions.
e. I am the Messenger - A self proclaimed loser accidentally foils a bank robbery and begins to get mysterious playing cards in the mail. A must for hose of you who cheer for the underdog. Easy read but powerful message.
OTHER SUGGESTIONS
Lord of the Rings book 1
Catcher in the Rye

What's been happening this week??? I was away 2 afternoons so sorry for the fact there was no web page update.
Tuesday's class: Students read over the Parody and Satire handout and hilighted the key differences. They they watched Word Crimes and decided if it was parody or satire and 5 criticisms made by the artist. They then watched "Girl In a Country Song" and also discussed whether it's parody or satire. To finish off , they read "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and then wrote a parody of it using a modern occupation. On the board was the first stanza of "The Passionate English Teacher". Students needs at least 3 stanzas.
Wednesday: Students read 3 satire articles: "The Movie I'd Like to See", "Tom King's Aboriginal Decorating Tips" and "Calls of the Weird" by Drew Hayden Taylor. They made a chart which compared these 3 in terms of issues, tone, audience and implied or stated solution. The remainder of the period was used to re-write the terms quiz or work on missing assignments.
Thursday: I'm BACK!!! We reviewed the concepts from the last 2 days and I expressed how impressed I am with the very heartfelt personal responses on Cultural Appropriation. We then read "The Nymph's Reply" noting how it is more complex and different in tone to "The Passionate Shepherd". Students then exchanged their passionate poem from Tuesday and had another student write a reply. NOTE: Those who have not reached this point need to do so before Monday's class.

Friday Sept. 25
Remember the upcoming cut off date for missing work.
We reviewed what an ode is then looked at the characteristics of an elegy. See Handouts tab for Elegy Handout.
Students read "Elegy" to determine if it was a modern or classical ode. We then read "Elegy for Jane" looking for imagery. Students compared odes to elegies noting that both could describe a person's traits, but only the ode needed to praise him/her or use sophisticated language.
We then read "Three Days to See" by Helen Keller, after learning about her life as a person who was unable to speak, hear or see. From theis personal essay we created a chart which compared personal essays to narratives. On Monday students will be writing an in-class personal essay on one of the following topics:
"If I had a superpower for 3 days"
"If I could change one thing in the world..."
"My favorite pastime/hobby"
"My philosophy of life"

Students got back the re-tests from Friday and were reminded of the fiction terms quiz this coming Wednesday. We took a quick look at the Sonnets handout with students labelling the rhyme scheme and stanza forms of all poems. If you were missing, you are responsible for knowing the differences between Shakespearian and Italian sonnets.
Students were to have read the handout from Friday on Cultural Appropriation but many had been away. Students were reading it and looking for things they agreed with and disagreed with.
IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL THIS... we were called to an assembly. Surprise to me. Students need to be sure to have their agree/disagree work ready for Wednesday when we will be using it.

Wednesday Sept. 16th
Students were reminded of the upcoming retest for Fig. Devices on Friday and the fiction terms quiz next Wednesday. I had planned it for next Tuesday, but there is no school that day! Duh! They are also to have their final drafts of the synthesis paragraph(s) ready for tomorrow. I haven't seen many ballads, so these need to get done in rough draft form. Those who have finished them, please drop them in the box and I will quickly review them with you.
We chose to read "Death by Landscape" today, looking for symbols and discussing the idea of cultural appropriation. You can read it at: <http://images.pcmac.org/SiSFiles/Schools/AL/MontgomeryPublic/CarverHigh/Uploads/Forms/DeathByLandscape_Atwood.pdf> We still have 2 pages left which we will read tomorrow. In reading, be able to identify at least 5 symbols.

We reviewed the Fiction section from the Terms and Devices Handbook. There will be a quiz on these terms next Tuesday.
We read "A Pair of Silk Stockings" by Kate Chopin and did questions #1, 2, and 3 as well as discussed how to find theme. There is a handout on theme at the Handouts tab if you need help. You will need to get a copy of the story with the questions from me as its not in electronic copy. You could however read the story at <http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short- stories/UBooks/PairSilk859.shtml> These questions are due tomorrow if you were in class today?

Students peer reviewed their paragraphs which were to be ready for today. MANY were not ready (insert frown here). Student were to use a check mark next to each of the following criteria they found present: hook? author? title in ""? key word - allusion or Gothic fiction? Conclusion? Also they were to examine it for the PEE principle by numbering the key points #1, 2 and 3: the 6 quotes as a, b,c, d,e, f, and the 3 explanations as A B and C. They were also to check for smooth quote integration as well as underline 3 words which needed to be more formal. These drafts were then put in the hand in bin. The final draft is due next Wednesday Sept. 16th.
We also did a worksheet on metoymy and synecdoche (See Handouts tab) which are due on Friday before the terms quiz.
We finished with learning what a ballad is and reading "Lord Randal" to find its characteristics. Students began to read "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner " - Iron Maiden version to see a frame story as well as begin deciphering. Students used the first 1/2 page of deciphering as their exit ticket.

We reviewed the rules for integration of quotations and began writing our rough drafts. Students are reminded that they need a rough draft for Tuesday. We will be using these in a peer edit exercise. Also, if you have not already, please drop me a note at the Help tab to ensure you are aware of how my teacher page works. Also, students began their flashcards to practice for their test next Friday. Students need to identify 10 terms which they are unfamiliar with and for each term they will construct 2 cards - Card one has the term on one side and the definition on the other. Card Two contains the term on one side and an example on the other. These examples must be new, not the ones I provided for you.
NOTE: Please forgive the reference to Rule of Thumb. I do not in any way support spousal abuse. If you're confused, check out the allusion.

Thursday Sept. 3rd
Students listened to a reading of "The Masque of Red Death" after looking at the topics for writing. Some chose to write about Gothic Fiction while others chose the two Prosperos. After reading and discussing the story, students chose 3 connections between the story and the article they chose as a question. Students were given an outline in which they were to fill in their 3 connections as well as quotations from each piece as support. We will be using this outline tomorrow to write a draft.
Also, yet again we didn't get to the flashcards. We will definitely be working on them tomorrow. Students who have decided to make their flashcards with devices are to download one of the following free apps available : Cram, Quizlet, and Studyblue. If you choose a different app, you must be able to add at least 20 cards. Also, if you have an app that can add a visual, that would be very helpful.

We did attendance then went to room 107 to work due to the tropical temperatures in my classroom. We tried a sample terms quiz in groups and then consulted our Handbook to review/correct. If you were missing, this quiz is available at the Handouts tab. Tomorrow we will be making flashcards for those terms which were new or foggy. You may make them using Quizlet or other apps. We then did a handout on allusion (see Handouts tab) by doing the back of the first page. This is to be ready for tomorrow's class. We also took a crack at the allusions in "American Pie". We will be watching a quick slide show tomorrow to see if we were correct. We finished with a quick explanation of Gothic literature as well as the Black Plague. Students got the short story "The Masque of Red Death" and will be reading it tomorrow. It is also available at xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/POE/masque.html.
