Monday June 6th
Students reviewed and clarified terms from last Friday's lesson. I suggest students make a list of these terms specifically those they are unsure about. We then did review exercises for poetry : first we did 5 m/c from an old exam then students broke into groups to find figurative devices in "Winter Saturday". Also they identified the poem's type, mood and theme and whether it was written in free or blank verse. These exercises are for marks and if you are not excused and missed (ie 'skipped') you need to see me to determine how you will give evidence of this PLO.

Students should look at all of the choices for each m/c and record/clarify any term he/she is not familiar with.

Today we did an activity where we created campaigns for Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, and Malcom. Everyone did a great job and accomplished most of the activity. If you had a group that did not quite get to the visual representation part please try to make something for Monday. Most groups have done a very simple poster that has their campaign slogan on it and an image of their person. You can do a poster, or a meme. REMINDER THAT EVERYTHING FOR YOUR ESSAY IS DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY! |

Today we began our Argument and Persuasion unit with Ms. Sydney (who is typing this). We started with introductions and describing the last argument we were in. We then made some rules for discussion which are as follows: 1. RESPECT each others view points, and time (no name calling) 2. Do not speak over others (take turns!) 3. Discussion has to be school appropriate 4. We cannot only contradict each other, we need to substantiate our disagreements with evidence. We then did a value line where we argued whether or not texting has ruined communication before having a class discussion on whether or not school prepared students for real life by teaching them real life skills. |

Tomorrow we will begin in the classroom and will be looking at how to post to edmodo and samples of quality posts. If you miss, be sure to check out the instructions and look at the samples.

Punctuation and font
Flashback
Sarcasm/irony
Hyperbole
Dialogue
Thoughts
Specific relevant details
Emotion and personal reaction.
Students then were to write a 5 sentence story about something which happened to them. Using my sample on the board , they asked me questions about it and pointed out where more detail was needed. We also discussed how a narrative essay required the following pieces:
Intro with a thesis, body with detail and a reflection. We read "Why I Run" as a sample and looked at how the author used the above techniques.
Students were then asked to use their 5 sentence story or choose from one of three topics ("It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time" , Tourists or Barbarians) and a write a rough draft of the BODY of their narrative. These need to be ready for tomorrow when we add the intro and reflection as well as add as many of the techniques from above as possible.

Students first did a practice Kahoot for poetry terms. We then discussed how they could use Kahoot as a study tool. I suggested that students go through their terms again and mark those which they got wrong on the Kahoot.
We read the story "The Moose and The Sparrow" after which students are to create a chart or Venn diagram showing the similarities and differences between Moose and Cecil. Quotations are needed.

Monday Feb. 8th
Students did a self and peer review/evaluation of themselves and their groups members from "The Chalk Outline". Be sure to ask for one of these evaluations so you can provide feedback on yourself and your group members.
Students first were given a grammar mini-lesson on the following errors:
1. Parallel structure - when using listing, writers must always use the same grammatical structure.
Ex. I came, I saw, I conquered.
2.not only, but also - are a couple which must be used together.
I was not only amazed but also afraid.
3. Pronoun use - Singular pronouns like everyone and everybody require singular possessive pronouns.
ex. Everyone brought his or her books to class.
The class thought its work was wonderful.
4.Dangling modifiers: The noun following an introductory phrase must be the 'do-er' of the action.
Ex. Lying on the road, the box was run over by the car.
Next we broke into groups and evaluated 5 sample paragraphs designating them from 1 to 5 (worst to best) and identifying what each had and each needed. This was a hand in assignment.
Students got their paragraphs from Friday back and are to look at the rubric to see what their rough draft has and needs. The final draft is due on Friday.
NOTE: Those still working on their drafts should hand them in ASAP to ensure you have my feedback before producing a final draft.
Lastly, students had a practice figurative devices test and using the posters in the room as well as the handout Unit One Terms and Devices (see Handouts tab) they were to figure out which devices were used.
