Students got their m/c back from yesterday's exercises and we reviewed the difference between writer's craft and comprehension as well as talked briefly about strategies for m/c questions and for the BCP as a themed exam (ex. One theme in the past is "Every generation has something to offer")
Students then chose 2 of the 3 paragraph responses from the 3 poems from yesterday and were to fill in the outline for each question. The outline is available at the Handouts tab. The choices of questions are as follows:
1. "Beyond the Snowbelt" - discuss the poem's theme.
2. "The Foot to its Child" - Discuss how the foot is used as an analogy for life.
3. "Basement Stairs" - Discuss the narrator's feelings toward her family Sunday rituals.
You will need to borrow a copy of each poem you choose. I have them in my files. Come and get one.
To those First Nations Grads who will be away tomorrow: Congratulations! Enjoy your day! Please come and see me Monday for anything you may have missed. We intend to work on our Taming of the Shrew projects as well as m/c for fiction and non-fiction in preparation for the BCP. You may have an extra day for your project and this work so that you can thoroughly enjoy your experience tomorrow.

Tuesday April 26th
Students are reminded that all novel work is soon due.
Also, MIAs for this unit include underlining/identifying rhetorical strategies from "The Unasked Questions of Attawapasket" and the synopses for the 6 sources for your Writing for Social Action project. I have at least 12 left to submit these.
We looked at the rubric for personal response and those who had submitted looked at how they could improve these. The common agreement was that most were missing references from the actual article/source. Remember you need a total of 3 personal responses for this project.
We then discussed the difference between persuasive and argumentative writing. Students got handouts for both including outlines for writing a persuasive and an expository essay. They were reminded that they might want to write one or the other BEFORE doing the oral component as these may be combined. For example, you could do a podcast of your persuasive essay. Or you might want to write an expository piece so that you are sure of your thesis.
Students who had not finished the 6 sources worked on these while others who had their 6 either worked on personal responses or chose expository or persuasive outlines to complete.

I will be away for the Young Authors Conference for the next two days.
Your assignment ( which is due on Friday) will be to find 6 sources for your topic for Writing for Social Action assignment. For these 6 sources, you need to record them on your bibliography page (try Easy Bib) and, write a synopsis of each and write at least one personal response to be handed in. By the end of Friday you should be to Step Four Forming a thesis and proposing some solutions.
On Tuesday you should be ready to perform/record/explain your oral component from Step Five. In this step you will be using the rhetorical strategies we studied today. How can you make them fit in?

Students were reminded of the BCP TOMORROW at 9 am. Be there early in room 125 (Mr. Gillies Lab).
Lit circle for Indian Horse - limited participation/contributions due to lack of reading. Below is a link to a newspaper article about Graham James, a former hockey coach convicted of sexual assault. It might be helpful to think about how this article links to the novel. The novel by Theo Fleury also explores the world of sexual abuse by this coach and how it affected him. Consider: Is there a similarity between Fleury's reaction and life and Saul's? Differences?
Students not reading Indian Horse were to be working on the novel study. I took the class back with 20 minutes left due to lack of work being done in the library.

Students looked at the samples on the edmodo novel site and we looked at what grade from 0 - 4 each one would get. Anyone already on edmodo will be able to access these examples . Keep in mind that great edmodo entries show connections and support/quotations. They make us THINK.
We then went to the library to read our novels.

Wednesday March 23rd
Students received the Novel Study package and went to the library to read their novels. MANY were major time wasters. This will come back to bite you in the butt. Get to work. Tomorrow we will start in the classroom and then move to the library. Please remember your novel.
NOTE: For those who wish to re-write the BCP, there is a BCP rewrite Thursday April 7th at 9 am. I have recommended that you do this. It's good practice for those who are still intending to write in June, and it counts towards the $500 Edubucks. If you have pass, you have the option of dropping the class for those repeating. Don't throw away a chance to get a better mark.

Students reviewed what makes a parody and then watched two videos of satire. My apologies but I had to remove one due to the strong language used in it. Below is also a science ( non-satirical video) to provide some balance in the whole issue. Students will be working on choosing their own topic to create a satire. Tomorrow you will receive some information which will assist you.
The students then worked on finishing their passionate poems as well as any material on their checklists.
NOTE:THERE ARE STILL MISSING PRESENTATIONS ON "THE DESTRUCTORS". PLEASE GET THESE COMPLETE BEFORE THE END OF THE WEEK BEFORE I PULL THE PLUG ON THIS ASSIGNMENT.
REMINDER: TOMORROW IS THE FICTION TERMS TEST. BE READY.

Reminder : Fiction Terms Quiz on Wednesday Mar. 2nd.
Egads! What happened to last Wednesday and Thursday???? Students did any missing presentations and worked on their "The Destructors" major assignment.
Today we began our Parody and Satire work. Students watched "Word Crimes" and noted the elements of parody within it. We then read "This is just To Say" from the Parody and Satire handout and wrote our own parodies of "This is Just to Say" Below is a sample:
This Is Just to Say
That I ran
into your new
SUV
in the parking lot.
I know you
Paid
Many thousands
For it Yesterday
Forgive me
But you were
Parked much
Too close.
We then read "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" and compared it to the parody "The Nymphs Reply" in terms of style, language, tone, theme, etc.
Students chose an occupation and were to write their own 3 quatrain version of "The Passionate _____________" using the same rhyme scheme and structure.
Ex.
"The Passionate Farmer"
Come live with me and be my love
And we will all the pleasures prove
Of barns and cows and fields and tractors
My wealth will be an important factor.
We will sit upon the swather
Grasshoppers won't be a bother.
Shooting gophers with my .22
Underneath the sky so blue.
The meadowlarks will swoop and sing
to you each May morning.
With these words my love I prove
So live with me and be my love.

Students are reminded that Friday is the due date for their Ode assignments. Two have already been submitted by I am waiting on the rest. Also, I still need a couple of "The Masque of Red Death" paragraphs. Please hand in ASAP.
Students got their quizzes back from yesterday's quiz. We went over the correct responses.
We then had about 10 minutes to finish our hi lighting from "This Side of Paradise" and discussed what we discovered: simple to the point diction and sentences with an eccentric voice.
We read "What Makes a Personal Essay?" (see handout tab) and read "Three Days to See" to look for the criteria from the handout.
Students then had the last 15 minutes to begin writing either a sonnet (either type) or an ode ( must be at least 10 lines long, praise something, use sophisticated language and employ imagery). A rough draft is due next Monday.
Remember that we will be writing our own personal essays on Friday. The topic list has been extended from The Bucket List to include My Passion, My Philosophy of Life and If I Had a Superpower. You may bring in notes , outlines, ideas, etc. but NO ROUGH DRAFTS.

Students are reminded that their "Masque of Red Death" paragraph rough drafts need to be submitted ASAP as well as their Ode assignment which is due by Friday.
We did a practice Kahoot as well as the actual quiz today. If you missed the quiz, you will be expected to complete it the DAY YOU RETURN.
We worked through the Sonnet handout by first labelling and decoding both the English and Italian sonnet. Students then did the page "Which is It?" and handed this page in. To finish the class, students were given the personal essay "This Side of Paradise" and were to read it and hi light examples of diction/word use, sentence structure and voice. We will be looking at this essay tomorrow and discussing what makes it a personal essay and how its different from a narrative essay. There will be an in-class essay on the topic My Bucket List on Friday. If you are missing, you need to arrange for a time to write and be timed. See me.

Students worked on an ode exercise (available at the handouts tab). Answers other than those whose instructions in hi lighting and identifying are to be done in sentences on loose leaf and attached. The remainder of the class was spent working on the Ode assignment. A couple of students had their partners miss class and were not able to finish the assignment. It is still the expectation that these assignments will be done by the end of the week and handed in. There will be no more class time to work on these.
Also, I am still missing a few "The Masque of Red Death" assignments. Please hand in your rough draft for feedback.
Quiz tomorrow for Figurative Devices. Don't be late.

Students did a Kahoot on the terms for next Tuesday's quiz then went to the library to work on their Ode assignment from yesterday. Some progressed while others got very little accomplished. By now students should have found all of the devices, chosen the illustrations they intend to us and begun putting together their mode of presentation ( iBook, poster, web page, etc.) Students will have only 30 minutes on Monday in the lab. It will be the student's responsibility to finish off any incomplete work and hand in their Ode assignment by next Friday.
Also, next Friday I will be contacting parents whose students are not using their time wisely and suggesting alternatives for these students. Students: If you don't want to re-take the course , don't. If you don't intend to do the work, drop the course and make alternate arrangements for your language credit.

Welcome to semester 2. Today we went over the course outline from yesterday and answered various questions. We then went back over the Figurative Devices for examples and worked on yesterday's practice quiz and corrected it. There will be a quiz on this material next Tuesday Feb. 9th. STUDY!
We then brainstormed questions from "The Masque of Red Death" and students were each assigned a question. Below are the questions and brainstormed answers.
1.What does the clock symbolize?
Reality; the passing of time; the inevitability of death
2.What does "pest ban" mean?
The signs of the plague
3. What does the last sentence of the story mean?
Death is inevitable no matter how you try to escape it.
4. What did the 7 rooms represent?
The 7 deadly sins with greed being in the black room. It was Prospero's greed which killed him.
Other interpretations include the stages of life to death with infancy to old age. The physical layout of the rooms from east to west also mimics the rising of the sun to the setting and the idea of the Egyptians that the Land of Death lay in the west where the sun set.
5. what did the red window represent?
It represented the Red Death. It was in the black room and was what everyone feared.
6.What is Poe's opinion of Prospero?
Poe saw Prospero as a despicable figure who left his own subjects to save himself.
7.What's the theme of this story?
You can't escape death.
The story portrays a dreamlike atmosphere which suggests that humans attempt to escape reality by creating a dream/escape.
8. Why did Prospero choose an abbey? Poe?
Prospero chose an abbey for the fact it could create isolation and the fact that people who were very religious of the time saw a church as a place of sanctuary and safety. Poe chose an abbey to show the irony or impropriety of Prospero using a holy building for hedonistic purposes.
9. Who or what was the uninvited guest?
Death
10.How does the concept of hedonism apply to the story?
Hedonism means one lives for his or her own personal pleasure without regard for the consequences for others. Prosper is a hedonist and his disregard for this subjects causes his death.
